The economical madness from the turn of the millennia and the story behind it’s protagonists.

The Dotcom Era

In the late 90s, the market was hot, the hype was high and the greed was overflowing in search for the next big “dot-com company”. The venture capital world was booming with a contagious enthusiastic vision around the opportunities hidden in the future of the world wide web.

Millions of dollars were being invested in these early “Internet businesses”. Some with brilliant ideas and dreams (others, not that really). But many of these pioneering companies that were building the early internet ended up having a remarkably short lifespan.

Soon after the turn of the millennium many of these dreams and hopes came suddenly to an end. A wave of dot-com companies declared bankruptcy in 2001 marking the crash and end of the dot-com era.

At the time Simon was obsessed with time and feeding stories of the Web back into itself and the book was the main source of inspiration for him to start conceptualizing the project.

From the catalogue of +130 companies, Simon cherry-picked 21 businesses.

A mix of companies that either had ahead-of-its-time ideas, Web 3.0 related practices or just pure ultimate examples of the stunning wildness of the early days of the web.

Final words

Metaphorically and literally, Dotcom Séance makes the internet remember itself. Is a project that celebrates the long-dead heroes of the past and simultaneously points inwards, reminding us to carefully avoid single-sided naive visions of technologies and our future with them.
